This project is using ICTs to support access to quality learning resources for public health and environmental studies in schools. Although open content has unanimously gathered consensus on its potential to enhance quality education, its access on different online platforms still poses problems because beneficiaries (learners and educators) don’t have the time to scour search engines and online libraries for necessary resources. The benefits of using open content include flexibility, easy reusability and adaptability.
To overcome the lack of quick and easy access to open resources, OLE Rwanda is finalizing the development of 100 course modules in Public Health and Environment. This content is going to improve quality education for 10,000 students and empower 200 teachers. It intends to provide open access science articles (at least 10 articles per module) to arm teachers with an understanding of different subjects. The articles represent a range of scientific expertise and information. We also have multimedia and interactive open content intended to facilitate learning through audio–visual instruction.
Such combination of open content, open access articles and videos is meant to support learning processes by improving the quality of education. Developed content will be reviewed, tested, edited and posted at an online and offline library (Basic E-learning library, or BeLL) and deployed in Schools to be used by education stakeholders. After reviewing the content, it will be tested in schools and revised once more before their deployment.
We certainly believe in the complementarity of technologies and resources to improve education. The key issue we are trying to address is not just the provision of open access resources for Public Health and Environment but of convenient one-stop shopping to make finding content easier for students and teachers.
